French and Dutch braids are basic, yet very popular, braiding techniques. Braids can be tight and close to the scalp, like cornrows, or loose from the nape of the neck, like fishtail braids. There are also advanced braiding styles that use more than three sections of hair, as well as micro braids.

    Preparing Hair for Braiding

    • Before you start braiding, keep your hands clean and free of rings so that your hair doesn't get caught. Make sure that your hair is smooth by using a hair-smoothing product to tame flyaway hairs. Use two different combs for braiding: A wide-tooth comb to keep your hair tangle-free, and a rat-tail comb--a fine-tooth comb with a long handle--for splitting your hair in sections.
