Do Hair Care Products Go Bad?

Hair products don't have specific expiration dates, but do eventually go bad. They can last for some time if stored and used properly. Spoiled products aren't harmful, but they won't work properly anymore and should be thrown out. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bacteria

    • According to the CareFair.com website, hair products go bad because of the bacteria and water that are transferred into the container through use. Most products will last three years if kept sealed in a cool, dry place, but will lose up to half their shelf life once opened. If the product changes color, texture or smell it is time to throw it away.

    Preservatives

    • The Naturally Curly website reports that companies use preservatives to keep mold and bacteria from spoiling products. All-natural products without these manufactured preservatives will not last as long. Natural preservatives like citrus extract can help, but they typically only protect the products from bacteria for 120 days.

    Storage

    • Products in spray cans or tubes are less susceptible to the effects of bacteria and humidity. Jars collect the most bacteria due to contact with hands. Label any products with the date of purchase or the date it was opened to keep track of when it should be thrown away.
