Hawthorn, a thorny shrub that grows to around 5 feet high, produces small berries called haws that are bright red or black when ripe. The flowers, berries and leaves of the hawthorn plant are used in medicinal preparations. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Benefits

    • Hawthorn is used to treat heart disease. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, hawthorn lessens the symptoms of heart failure and improves heart health. The herb may also be useful in fighting chest pains caused by low blood flow to the heart and in lowering high blood pressure, although as of 2010 more studies are needed before any recommendations can be made.

    Features

    • Hawthorn berries contain heart-healthy plant chemicals such as flavonoids. Flavonoids are rich in antioxidants, which are substances that destroy compounds in the body called free radicals that cause cellular damage and death. Flavonoids help the body by improving circulation and preventing damage to blood vessels.

    Warning

    • Hawthorn is generally considered safe when it is used according to the recommended dosage. The side effects, although rare, include a racing heartbeat, headache and stomach upset. The University of Maryland Medical Center warns that heart disease is a serious medical condition. Do not attempt to self-treat a heart problem without consulting a doctor.
