What is a Retail License in Ohio?

Businesses that sells goods or services in Ohio are required to have one of the state's retail business licenses. A small fee is collected for most of the licenses, in addition to the taxes the business will be required to pay.

  1. Types

    • Ohio has seven different categories of retail licenses. A business must get the license that applies to its type of business. The categories include vendor, service vendor, transient vendor, delivery vendor, seller, direct pay permit holder and use tax account holder.

    Identification

    • A person who is operating a retail business from a set location in Ohio is required to have a vendor license issued by the county in which he does business. If the business has multiple fixed locations, a separate license must be acquired for each distinct location. The other six types of licenses are valid throughout the state and are issued by the state Department of Taxation.

    Considerations

    • Licensing is the way the state and county monitor business activity in Ohio. Business owners must file the correct paperwork with the county or state and pay the fee to legally operate their business in the state. There is no annual renewal fee for these retail licenses.
