What Is Mass Rehab Commission?
The Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) is a division of the state's Office of Health and Human Services. Its primary goal is to help citizens with disabilities to secure employment and independent living.

The agency works with disabled individuals in three specific areas: vocational rehabilitation services, community living services and determining eligibility for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). "MRC serves people with all types of disabilities except those who are blind. Individuals with visual disabilities are served through the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind," the commission's website states.

The Vocational Rehabilitation Program helps consumers prepare for entry into the workforce and recruits potential employers, while the Community Living program works to enable the successful introduction of clients into an independent-living environment. The Disability Determination Services program serves as a first step in ascertaining the rights of an individual to receive federal Social Security disability benefits.

Twenty-five local offices and three regional centers support clients in the Vocational Rehabilitation effort, while the Community Living program holds contracts with 11 assisted-living facilities in the state, in addition to providing many other services. Worcester and Boston are the sites of the only two Disability Determination offices.
