Tribulus aquaticus is also known as Tribulus lacusoris, Tribulus marinus or Trapa natans. The common name is the water chestnut---the same crunchy white vegetable used in some Chinese dishes. Name Similarity

The belief that water chestnut extract will act as a muscle builder seems to be based on its similarity (in name only) to Tribulus terristris. This is an unrelated plant that has been shown to elevate testosterone levels. Tribulus terristris is not a steroid but is often used along with steroids, which reduce testosterone levels.

Water chestnuts have been shown to be antioxidants, and antioxidants help reduce muscle soreness. There is no difference between the antioxidants provided by whole water chestnuts and those provided by the extract, but whole water chestnuts are also an excellent source of fiber.
