How do I Properly Store a Car Battery When Not in Use?

Since they are rechargeable, car batteries that are not being used can last a long time with proper storage. They do not require much care -- just a little attention.

  1. Before Storing

    Storage

    • Store the battery in a cool, dry place. The cooler the better, as long as it does not fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (freezing) for any significant length of time. The surface you store it on is of no significance.

    While Storing

    • Check on the battery every two months. Charge it if it falls below fully-charged. Clean any corrosion or gunk as needed. Fully charge before using.
