Winter Flounder Fishing in New Jersey

Winter flounder is a flatfish that lies on the bottom of the sea floor.

Winter flounder can be found in the bottoms of bays starting in early spring through May. This type of fishing in New Jersey picks up in mid-March, especially at Great Bay and Tuckerton Bay on the Southern New Jersey coast.

Sandy Hook Channel

Sandy Hook channel is a popular destination point for those fishing for winter flounder. It is located near the Highlands and north of Sandy Hook on the northern coast of New Jersey. However, a license is required to fish in this area.

Manasquan River

The Manasquan River runs through Central New Jersey. According to Capt. Anthony Reina, who's been fishing the area since 1995, it is one of the prime locations to go winter flounder fishing. There are various locations that flounder can be found along the river, such as near the Mantoloking Bridge.

Seaside Heights

Since winter flounder tend to lurk in muddy areas, the rough bottoms of Seaside Heights can be a good location for winter flounder fishing. Try using squid strips or mackerel belly as bait.
