Uses for Agave Syrup as a Substitute for Corn Syrup

Uses for Agave Syrup as a Substitute for Corn Syrup thumbnail
The agave plant produces a nectar that can substitute for corn syrup.

Agave syrup, or nectar, is a liquid sweetener produced from the agave, a succulent similar to the aloe vera plant. It can often be used in place of honey or corn syrup. Many people use agave syrup because it is considered vegan and has a low glycemic level; they also believe it to be a more "natural" product than corn syrup. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Baked Goods

    • When a recipe for cakes, cookies or pies calls for corn syrup or honey, agave syrup can be substituted. Agave syrup is about 1-1/2 times as sweet as regular corn syrup, so you will need to adjust the amount used. Agave may cause baked items to brown more quickly, so it is recommended to reduce oven temperatures by 25 degrees and increase the baking time slightly.

    Drinks

    • One place where agave syrup shines is in drinks--both hot and cold. It is easier dissolved than sugar or honey. Use it in iced and hot tea, coffee, lemonade, juice and alcoholic beverages. It has a more neutral flavor than either corn syrup or honey and it doesn't crystallize at either hot or cold temperatures.

    Syrups

    • You can also use agave syrup in place of your regular syrup on foods such as pancakes, waffles, ice cream and oatmeal. As it is sweeter than sugar, adjust the amount accordingly.

    Salad Dressings

    • Agave syrup can be used in salad dressing in place of a regular sweetener. It blends well even in cold dressings and the liquid texture is smooth.
