The Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser comes with the Windows operating system. At times, Microsoft releases newer versions of the browser that include security and feature updates.

Microsoft's server operating system, called Windows 2000 Server, was released in March 2000. Support for this product ended in July 2010.

Mainstream support for the server operating system had already ended by the time IE 8 was released, so IE 8 does not support Windows Server 2000. The last supported version of Internet Explorer is Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1.
