Error code 39 occurs when peripherals that use CDs cannot be accessed.

Windows XP can generate error code 39 when trying to access a CD in the CD-ROM drive. This error can also occur when making changes to the CD-burning software, such as updating or upgrading the software.

  1. Causes

    • Error code 39 is generated when the computer cannot load the device driver for the CD-ROM or CD burner. It can also occur when the device driver for the CD-ROM or CD burner has become corrupted.

    Solutions

    • Users can remove and then reinstall the device driver by removing and then reinstalling the device. Alternate options are to remove the device driver and then tell Windows XP to "Scan for Hardware Changes"; install the new device driver from the Internet; or manually remove the device driver and select a replacement driver from the CD-ROM or CD burner manufacturer's website.

    Advanced Solutions

    • If removing and reinstalling the driver does not work, it may be necessary to correct the registry entry for the device by selecting the registry entry for the device and deleting it. However, you must have administrative rights on the computer to do this.
