Information About a Salicylate Sensitive Diet
Many fruits, vegetables and herbs contain natural chemicals called salicylates. The chemicals work as a preservative, protecting against diseases, insects, fungi and bacteria. Some people are sensitive to salicylate, causing allergy symptoms and reactions to certain foods. To treat the allergy symptoms, a salicylate sensitive diet is suggested.

Salicylates are found in many fruits, vegetables and herbs. Not all food contains salicylates. Berries, grapes, oranges, peppers, olives and spinach contain high levels of salicylate. It is also found in tea and coffee.
Elimination

To best control symptoms, eliminate salicylate from the diet. People can handle different levels of the chemical. Slowly add lower level salicylic foods back into the diet after elimination. Keep a record of the foods eaten and any symptoms. If a certain food causes a reaction, continue to avoid consumption.

Salicylates are also found in many other products used daily. Anyone with a sensitivity to salicylate should check all household products. Cosmetics, hair care products, medications, soaps and fragrances all contain salicylates.
