Shih Tzu Puppy Development
Shih Tzu puppies roughly follow the same developmental stages as most dog breeds. A positive and social environment is required to raise a happy Shih Tzu.
-
First Few Weeks
-
They start seeing the world after about two weeks. Shih Tzus are born with their eyes and ears closed. They start to open their eyes between 12 to 15 days of life and a few days later their ears open.
Month 1
-
Puppies start to get curious about the world. When puppies are around a month old, they start to walk and recognize others. At this time they also develop their first set of teeth.
-
At 7 Months
-
They are at the last stages of puppyhood by 7 months. Puppies are very social and active by 7 months. Both sexes become sexually mature and get their permanent teeth. Female Shih Tzus are fully grown, while male Shih Tzus continue to grow until they reach 18 months.
8 to 12 months
-
At a year they become young adults. Shih Tzu puppies are capable of holding their waste for about eight hours once they reach 8 months. From 9 to 12 months they are ready to switch to adult dog food.
Healthy Development
-
Use treats to encourage your Shih Tzu. Shih Tzus need positive encouragement and rewards. These dogs do not do well if reprimanded or punished.
