What Is a Mini DV Cassette? thumbnail
Despite their tiny size, Mini DVs offer maximum storage space.

Direct video, or DV, cassettes offer physical storage space for recording movies. They load directly into the camcorder, which then records the information captured by the lens directly onto the tape. DV cassettes come in various shapes and sizes, the smallest of which is the Mini DV.

  1. Identification

    • Smaller in size and capable of holding large amounts of information, Mini DV cassettes are miniature versions of VHS casette tapes, used in smaller cameras. The cassette itself is usually made of plastic, while the tape inside is metal evaporated, or ME.

    Dimensions

    • The cassette itself measures only 2.6 by 1.9 by 0.5 inches (66 by 48 by 12.2 mm), while the tape inside is only 0.25 inches thick. This is much smaller than a VHS tape, which is 0.4 by 4.1 by 0.98 inches (188 by 104 by 25 mm).

    Storage Capacity

    • Despite their small size, Mini DV cassettes offer a large amount of space. For example, a Mini DV tape measuring 65 meters long could hold around 80 minutes of footage, or 11 GB of information.
