Adult Tonsillectomy Post-Op Information

Adults who undergo a tonsillectomy generally recover in 10 to 20 days.

A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing the tonsils for those with chronic tonsil infections. Adults who undergo this surgical procedure typically have a longer recovery period than children.

Risks

Bleeding is a main concern when an adult has a tonsillectomy. Bleeding is normal right after the tonsillectomy is performed, but bleeding that is excessive or occurs after seven days is more serious. Let your doctor know about bleeding that seems excessive or does not stop in its own. Dehydration is a common problem after surgery and occurs because the patient does not drink enough fluids.

Pain/Swelling

Removing the tonsils through surgery is often painful. Doctors prescribe an oral pain medication to be taken after surgery and for several weeks afterward. Avoiding dehydration helps to decrease pain and bleeding. Swelling of the tongue and uvula is common after an adult tonsillectomy and usually subsides a few days after surgery.

Recovery Period

Adults usually recover from a tonsillectomy in 10 to 20 days. Having a tonsillectomy will require time off from work. Adults who have a desk job often feel able to return to work within a week to 10 days. Strenuous jobs require some additional time off to avoid increased bleeding.
