Comparison of an LED TV to an LCD TV

LED TVs use LCD technology as well.

Although marketed as an LED, or light emitting diode, television, an LED television is simply an LCD, or liquid crystal display, television that uses a more modern type of back lighting.

Types

There are three types of LCD televisions. Since LED televisions incorporate LCD technology as well, they are included in this family of technology. LCD televisions use CFL fluorescent light for back-lighting content where televisions marketed as LED use LED lighting, either edge-lit of local for their back lighting.

Significance

LED televisions are superior when it comes to the blacks that are displayed on screen. Standard LCD televisions block light when producing blacks whereas LED televisions use dimming to produce the same black content, resulting in deeper blacks overall.

Costs

Traditional LCD televisions cost less in overall power consumption as the CFL fluorescent lighting uses less power than the LED type. At the moment, LED televisions are also more expensive due to their inherent improvement in quality and clarity.
