The FDA is the Food and Drug Administration, and the USDA is the United States Department of Agriculture. Both are federal government bodies that regulate food, agriculture and other industries to ensure the health and safety of Americans.

    • The FDA is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services. Its role is to protect the public health by ensuring the safety of our food supply, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices and biological products. It also regulates the tobacco industry.

    USDA

    • The United States Department of Agriculture encompasses several offices and agencies that are responsible for agriculture, food and nutrition, rural and community development, travel and recreation, natural resources and environment. USDA agencies include the Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency and Rural Development.

    Overlap

    • Both entities work in partnership to address issues of food safety. The FDA provides consumer resources on specific issues, while the USDA has a broader mandate to set federal policies regarding food safety and agricultural concerns.
