What Is the Easiest Musical Instrument to Play?

What Is the Easiest Musical Instrument to Play? thumbnail
Singing comes naturally to most people.

There is no musical instrument that is easy to play at a high standard--to become proficient or professional as a musician on any instrument requires hours of practice. However, there are some instruments which offer a relatively easy start for the beginner musician.

  1. Voice

    • Many children can sing even before they talk, so the voice is a natural instrument for beginning musical study. Through singing lessons and vocal practice, you can learn a lot about music without having to buy an instrument or carry it around.

    Drums

    • Playing a full drum kit requires skill and coordination, but drums are one of the easier instruments to get to grips with as a beginner. For a start, the sound is easily produced with a simple stick hit, unlike brass instruments which require some initial technical ability in order to produce a sound. Also, beginners can start with a single drum--using only the hands to play, for example--before the other components of the drum kit are introduced gradually.

    Recorder

    • The recorder is a lightweight and inexpensive instrument, and for this reason is often used for young music learners. The instrument is small and easy to handle, and the playing action is simple. The recorder offers an easy introduction to the woodwind family of instruments, without the complications of reeds or complex fingering patterns.
