Business Analyst Methodology

One of the oldest and most used business analyst methodologies is the waterfall methodology. In the waterfall methodology, the business analyst obtains approval from the client or project team for each step in the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

  1. Project Initiation

    • To evaluate the current business process and determine possible changes and improvements, the business analyst meets with the clients to discuss problems and weaknesses of the current business systems. The business analyst prepares a proposal for a new business process and obtains the client's approval before proceeding to the next step of the SDLC.

    Gathering Business Requirements

    • The business analyst interviews the client to determine the business requirements for the new business system to follow. The business analyst creates a business requirements document and obtains the client's approval so she can prepare a program function specifications document for the software developer.

    System Design

    • Once the software developer approves the program specifications document, the business analyst prepares documents such as data flow diagrams, program flowcharts, program/job frequency charts, input and output filenames and reports. Once the system design documents are approved by the project team, the software developer begins system construction.

    System Testing

    • The business analyst prepares plans for unit testing and system testing. In unit testing, the business analyst tests the program function by itself. In system testing, the business analyst tests the system as it relates to the external business systems.

    System Implementation and Deployment

    • Once the unit and system testing are approved by the project team and clients, the business analyst prepares an implementation plan and obtains approval from the client and project team. The business analyst and software developer installs the new system and ensures a smooth transition from the current system to the new business system.
