Mustang Convertible Top Problems

Mustang convertibles offer their owners the enjoyment of open air motoring at the touch of a button. The joy can be soured, however, when the convertible top won't raise or lower on command.

  1. Sun Damage

    • The stitching in the convertible top holds the bindings and the side cables in place. Sun exposure can damage the stitching. If the convertible top is in otherwise good shape, it is possible to replace the stitching and save the top.

    Rear Window Problems

    • Heat sealant and silicone adhesive are used to bind the rear window to the top fabric of 1990 to present-day Mustang convertible tops. The potential for leaks or separation of the rear window from the top exists as the top ages. Older generation Mustangs from 1965 through 1973 use plastic rear windows as original equipment for their convertible tops. This window type is held in place with a slide fastener, which is a heavy zipper. The slide fastener needs to be lubricated yearly to prevent wear. The plastic rear window can experience wear if it is not unzipped from the top prior to lowering it into the storage area behind the rear seat.

    Power Top Pump

    • Mustangs use a hydraulic pump to make the top go up or down. If the top does not move, the cause could be the fluid level in the pump, which may be leaking. Restrictions in the hydraulic lines, loose or broken fittings or a damaged cylinder can also be the source of the problem. If the convertible top is still making noises after the fluid level in the pump is filled, the pump may be faulty.
