On January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States of America. Obama is the first president to be born in Hawaii, and the sixth president since World War II to be left handed.

    • Obama is the first African-American to be president. He is also the fourth president to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter. Obama received the award in 2009 for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

    • Barack Obama is a member of the Democratic Party. His inauguration made him just the third Democratic president since Lyndon Johnson left office in 1969. Only Jimmy Carter (1977 to 1981) and Bill Clinton (1993 to 2001) preceded him.
