Every Six Sigma project begins with a well-crafted charter

Six Sigma is a process improvement methodology companies use to improve quality by identifying and eliminating product defects or process errors. The methodology is based on well-established and well-proven techniques. To launch a Six Sigma project, the first step project managers must take is to conceptualize, write and present the Six Sigma project charter.

  1. Identification

    • Six Sigma process improvement methodology consists of five well-established process improvement phases called Define, Measure Analyze, Improve and Control or the DMAIC. The Define phase establishes the reasons to launch the Six Sigma project, and includes researching and writing the Six Sigma charter.

    The Charter

    • The Six Sigma project charter tells the reasons and benefits of a Six Sigma project to stakeholders. For example, a Six Sigma project will result in changes to processes, job functions and resource allocations. So the benefits of the project must be well defined and sold to key stakeholders and project team members.

    Example

    • There is no standard format for a Six Sigma project charter. It's up to the communication style of the Six Sigma project manager. But, generally, the charter should include the following information: business case; problem statement; goal statement; scope statement; cost of poor quality; required resources; and key performance metrics. Each of these areas are of interest to top management and stakeholders.
