Home Remedy to Remove Chlorine From Hair

Chlorine is an alkaline solution used to disinfect swimming pools. When exposed to chlorine, light hair colors can take on a green tint due to oxidation and metals in the water. There are several home remedies for clarifying the hair to restore its natural color. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Tomato Juice

    • Soak the hair with tomato juice before washing to remove the green tint. The acidity breaks down and washes away the color. Apply enough tomato juice to dry hair to saturate it---the exact amount depends on the length and thickness of the hair. Allow the juice to sit for up to 10 minutes before washing and conditioning your hair as usual.

    Vinegar or Lemon Juice

    • A diluted vinegar or lemon juice rinse before washing can neutralize the pH of chlorinated hair and remove the green tint. Dilute 1/4 cup of cider vinegar or lemon juice in 1 pint of water. Pour it over dry hair and allow it to soak in. Use more if necessary. Wash and condition your hair as usual.

    Baking Soda

    • Mix equal parts baking soda and shampoo to form a paste. Wash your hair as usual with the shampoo/baking soda paste to remove the green tint and any undesirable buildup. Apply conditioner after washing to prevent excess frizz.
