Hair extensions add length and volume to your natural hair.

Hair extensions allow almost anyone to add length, volume and texture to their natural hair. As this trend continues to grow, so do discussions about whether extensions are bad for your hair. If you're considering hair extensions, you'll want to know what dangers might be lurking beneath your new, long, lustrous locks. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Application Methods

    • Applying extensions involves sewing, weaving, clamping, bonding or clipping pieces of human or synthetic hair to your natural hair. Application method directly affects damage potential. Sewing, weaving and clamping techniques cause little or no damage when done correctly, while heat and glue bonding may scorch or split the hair. Clip-in extensions can be applied and removed daily with virtually no harm.

    Wear and Tear

    • Improper application or care of extensions may cause pulling, itching, headaches and breakage. The wrong brush or brushing technique can rip hair at the roots, extension attachment and ends. Natural hair may become thin and fragile due to extra weight on the scalp. Extensions become dull and brittle with inadequate moisturizing. Some people may experience allergies to the bonding solution.

    Maintenance and Removal

    • The danger of doing real harm to your hair becomes greater the longer you wear extensions. Sewn, weaved, clamped and bonded extensions must be tightened, or removed and replaced, every two to six months, increasing the chances of damage. With clip-in extensions, that you snap in and out yourself, damage is less of an issue since weave or glue removal is not required.
