Preparation H is an over-the-counter medication used to treat hemorrhoids. The active ingredients in this cream work together to relieve the painful itching and swelling associated with hemorrhoids. For years, many people have also touted Preparation H as a wrinkle cream. The ingredients in this cream may temporarily smooth the skin. However, none of these ingredients are known as wrinkle treatments.

Preparation H Active Ingredients

There are four active ingredients in original Preparation H. The first active ingredient listed on the package is light mineral oil, a skin protectant. Next is petrolatum, another skin protectant and lubricant. Phenylephrine is next. This is a vasoconstrictor, which shrinks bodily tissue. This ingredient reduces itch and swelling. Shark liver oil, the last active ingredient listed, is also a skin protectant.

What About Wrinkles Under the Eye?

Based on a number of reviews, Preparation H temporarily reduces the appearance of lines on the face. But none of its ingredients work to permanently get rid of wrinkles. Preparation H may tighten the skin in the same way that hemorrhoids tighten and shrink after using this product. The skin tightens, making wrinkles less visible. But again, this effect is temporary.

Why Use Preparation H Under Eyes?

Preparation H reduces the swelling in hemorrhoids, and many people claim it reduces facial swelling as well. Using this product under the eyes may help reduce puffiness often seen in the morning. Be careful; do not get this medicine into the eyes. This medication is not indicated for use on the face.
