Freeware Defragmentation

Defragmentation software can improve the performance of a hard drive.

While Windows comes with its own defragmentation---or defragging---program, some computer users prefer to use external defragging software that has more features and options. There are many free defragging programs out there, each with their own set of added features and abilities.

  1. Defraggler

    • Defraggler by Piriform is a small fregragging program that is heavy in added features. Besides offering regular defragging, Defraggler can also run scheduled defrags, defrag just the empty space on a drive, or run a "quick defrag" that can fix minor fragmentation problems. Defraggler has received acclaim from sites such as Download.com and PC World, and was chosen by readers of Lifehacker as the best disk defragmenter available. Defraggler is compatible with most versions of Windows.

    MyDefragPowerGUI

    • MyDefragPowerGUI is an updated version of JKDefrag, a freeware defragger originally designed by Jeroen Kessels. MyDefragPowerGUI can defrag an entire drive, selected files, or empty drive space. It is an entirely portable program, meaning that no files need to be installed in order for it to run. MyDeFragPowerGUI can run from a flash drive or any other portable device and is compatible with most versions of Windows.

    Auslogics Disk Defrag

    • Auslogics Disk Defrag has many of the features of Defraggler and MyDefragPowerGUI such as scheduled defragmentation, free space defragging and customizable defragmenting. But it also has several addtional features such as "intelligent" defragging that moves commonly used system files to the fastest part o the disk drive, as well as an auto-defrag mode that runs whenever a system is idle. Auslogics Disk Defrag works for all versions of Windows from XP onwards.
