Co-trimoxazole stops bacteria from replicating themselves. MayoClinic.com states co-trimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim) is an antibiotic pill that works to clear certain bacterial infections. These drugs work together to inhibit the synthesis of folic acid, starving bacteria of the required material to replicate DNA.
Prescription

Sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim is an effective treatment for acne. A study by CB Turowski of the Drexel University College of Medicine found that sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim and other antibiotics are effective in treating acne in patients who are resistant or do not desire other treatments. This is due to patient side effects and other effects associated with prescription antibiotic use.
