Jack Kilby started work on the development of the silicon chip in July 1958. The first computer using silicon chips made its debut in 1961 in a computer for the Air Force.

Individual transistors on the silicon chip open and close gates, and a positive electrical charge is applied to each gate to attract electrons, which causes current to flow. When a negative electrical charge is applied to a gate, it stops current flow and closes the gate.
