Define Silicon Chip

The silicon chip is an integrated circuit used in the production of computers and other electronics. It was invented by Jack Kilby while he was working for Texas Instruments.

  1. History

    • Jack Kilby started work on the development of the silicon chip in July 1958. The first computer using silicon chips made its debut in 1961 in a computer for the Air Force.

    Function

    • Individual transistors on the silicon chip open and close gates, and a positive electrical charge is applied to each gate to attract electrons, which causes current to flow. When a negative electrical charge is applied to a gate, it stops current flow and closes the gate.

    Significance

    • Without the invention of the silicon chip, many electronic devices, including personal computers, would not exist today. The chip plays important roles in the development of technologies for many industries, including everything from the health industry to the entertainment industry.
