VoIP needs speed.

The "IP" in "VoIP" (Voice over Internet Protocol) is better known as the "IP" of the "TCP/IP" (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) stack. TCP includes procedures and buffering to deal with timing issues and received packet ordering. With VoIP these functions are handled at a higher layer, and so UDP (User Datagram Protocol ) is used for the Transport Protocol instead.

  1. User Datagram Protocol

    • UDP was first defined in 1980 and is managed, updated and distributed by the Internet Engineering Task Force.

    Comparison with TCP

    • UDP is commonly defined by its differences to TCP. Whereas TCP establishes a session between the two communicating endpoints, UDP is a "connectionless system". Whereas TCP guarantees ordering of packets, UDP does not. Because of these characteristics, UDP makes for faster communication with less meta-data overhead. The down side is: the protocol is seen as unreliable because of its lack of functions to maintain a connection or marshal received packets.

    UDP for VoIP

    • As Transmission Control is dealt with higher up the protocol stack with VoIP, the protocol's lack of features are not a detraction. Its speed is beneficial to VoIP implementations.
