Toll-free Telephone HelpLine

The IRS operates five toll-free public telephone helplines. Each answers Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. in your local time zone. The agents can provide answers to basic questions or direct you to the appropriate office for more help. Wait times can be long during busy periods, especially during tax season.
Call 800-829-1040 for individuals, 800-829-4933 for businesses, 877-829-5500 for exempt organizations, 800-829-4059 (TDD) if you have hearing difficulties or 800-908-4490 for victims of identity theft.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service can help to resolve individual, business and systemic tax difficulties when all else fails. An interactive map generates links to advocates' offices throughout the U.S.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Through VITA, IRS-certified volunteers prepare simple tax returns for low- and moderate-income taxpayers at thousands of community sites throughout the country. Call 800-906-9887 to locate the nearest VITA site.
