What Is the RTF File Format?

RTF stands for Rich Text Format. It is a proprietary file type created by Microsoft Corporation for use with word processing applications, including most versions of Microsoft Word.

Function

RTF saves text documents in a format that preserves formatting and included image files, according to Colorado State University's Access program website. Microsoft designed it to allow transfer of documents between different devices, word processing programs and operating systems.

Advantages

RTF offers nearly universal compatibility among word processing software and operating systems, according to CSU's Access. In addition, saving a document in RTF format instead of .doc format may help prevent the spread of viruses because RTF does not allow the user to attach macros which sometimes carry viruses.

Disadvantages

The major disadvantage to saving a file in RTF format is the relatively large size, especially if the file contains embedded images.
