New Jersey Tax Refund Information

New Jersey requires residents to pay estimated income taxes on money earned within the state to fund the state government. New Jersey provides tax refunds to individuals who have overpaid state income tax over the previous year.

  1. Time Frame

    • As of March 2010, New Jersey tax refunds should be processed in three to four weeks if they were submitted by mail. New Jersey tax refunds submitted electronically should be received by taxpayers within two weeks. The same two-week time frame applies to taxpayers who want their refund sent directly to their bank accounts via direct deposit.

    Inquiries

    • As of July 2010, the state of New Jersey does not have an online inquiry system for taxpayers inquiring about the status of their refund. Taxpayers may use the Automated Refund Inquiry System by dialing 1-800-323-4400 within New Jersey and surrounding states or 1-609-826-4400 nationwide. This service may be accessed any day of the week. You need to know the amount of your refund and your Social Security number to confirm your identity.

    Lost Refunds

    • If a check has not been received within 30 days from being issued, a replacement check may be requested. You can call the Customer Service Center at 609-292-6400 between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the workweek. It may take an additional 30 days for the state to send out a replacement check.
