What Is the Molex Connector Used For? thumbnail
A Molex connector can drive power to the motherboard

Computers are composed of a myriad of complex hardware. This hardware demands constant power in order to perform together effectively. One device that assists this task is the Molex connector.

  1. Definition

    • A Molex connector is a type of pin and socket connector originally pioneered by Molex for use in home appliances. Molex connectors are now found in most standard PC's.

    Function

    • In the case of computers, Molex connectors are used to connect DC, or direct current, power to the drives housed in a PC cabinet or the box containing the main components of a computer. Molex connectors typically provide power to such devices as the hard disc drive, video card, fans and motherboard.

    Process

    • Molex connectors functions as a two-piece, pin and socket interconnection. One piece contains cylindrical spring-metal pins, the other contains cylindrical spring-metal sockets. These pins and sockets are aligned in a rectangular matrix configuration within nylon shells. The nylon shells can be arranged to support two to 15 circuits, depending on the charge needed. These circuits carry a direct current of power to the attached computer devices.
