Choosing Windows XP Professional over the cheaper XP Home edition depends on your computing requirements. Certain features you may need are exclusive to the professional edition.

  1. Background

    • Microsoft's Windows XP operating system is available in several versions, including XP Home and XP Professional.

XP Professional includes additional features that are generally more important to the business market. If you do not require these features, XP Home edition is probably sufficient.

    Differences

    • The key feature lacking in XP Home edition is the ability to join a computer with XP to a Windows domain network. Domain networks are commonly used within businesses. Business PCs therefore commonly use Windows XP Professional.

File, folder and user level security is also less advanced within XP Home edition, though usually sufficient to meet the needs of typical home users.

    Alternatives

    • Windows XP Media Center edition is an enhanced version of the XP Home edition aimed at media-center PCs and with additional audio and visual functions.

Windows XP Professional x64 contains all the features of XP Professional, but is adapted for use with 64-bit processors only.
