Diversity training provides participants with awareness, knowledge, and skills to manage differences between people that exist in the workplace. Diversity includes differences in culture, ethnicity, sexual preference and religion.

  1. History

    • Diversity training began to be implemented in the 1970s and 1980s, although in a different form. It began under such labels as cross-cultural training, race relations training and multicultural education.

    Purpose

    • The workplace today is made up of individuals from many different cultures and demographics, with differing lifestyles. Conflict is inevitable, often resulting in lower productivity and performance. Diversity training raises awareness of unconscious biases towards different groups and provides tools on how to be more inclusive.

    Benefits

    • The goal of diversity training is to assist with conflict resolution, improve communication and foster teamwork. It is designed to create an inclusive environment where employees are more accepting of co-workers regardless of differences. It also helps protect an organization against harassment and discrimination lawsuits.
