Overheated laptops can cause burns and other injuries.

All laptops generate heat, but an overheated laptop can cause damage to your computer and to yourself. There are several reasons why your laptop may be getting hot too fast, and steps you can take to remedy the situation.

  1. Malfunctioning Cooling System

    • Laptop cooling systems are very small and are sometimes inadequately designed to effectively cool down the laptop's parts. When a laptop's cooling system stops working properly, internal temperatures rise very quickly. Keep the CD-ROM tray open to encourage air circulation and replace the fan as soon as possible.

    Dust

    • A dusty laptop is another common reason for excess heat. That heat can then cause internal component failure. Clean your laptop every three to six months with a can of compressed air to help eliminate buildup.

    Blocked Vents

    • The vents located on the bottom of your laptop often become blocked when placed on soft surfaces like laps and bedding. Create a space between your laptop and soft surfaces by purchasing a laptop desk or cooling pad for it to rest on. The elevated position promotes better circulation and airflow to the intake grill.
