The History of Oriental Horsehair Firing

The History of Oriental Horsehair Firing thumbnail
Oriental horsehair firing is based on the Japanese art of Raku pottery.

Horsehair ceramic pottery is beautiful and each piece is one of a kind. Various glazes are applied before firing to produce color combinations and designs. Real horse hair is applied at one stage of the process to create an unusual effect unknown in any other type of ceramics.

  1. Raku

    • The technique used for horsehair fired pottery is based on the Japanese art of raku pottery. It was first used over 350 years ago to create sets for tea ceremonies. It was a favorite of Zen Buddhist masters for its natural, unpretentious beauty.

    Discovery

    • Raku pottery was first introduced to the U.S. in 1941 by Warren Gilbertson at the Chicago Art Institute. In the 1980s, a Native American Acoma Pueblo potter, Corrine Louis, discovered the horsehair technique by accident using the raku method after strands of her own hair contacted some ware from her kiln.

    Horsehair Firing

    • Horsehair became a part of a natural progression in the art of raku ceramics. The coarse hair from the tail of a horse leaves a distinctive black carbon marking on the surface of the piece while it is still very hot. It has become a popular technique among raku potters.
