Dry Camping in the Padre Islands

Many campgrounds are primitive in the Padre Islands, meaning RV dry camping is a must to enjoy all these islands have to offer.

Dry camping in the Padre Islands is a popular way for RV and camper travelers to see the natural beauty of the islands. There are many primitive campsites and free parking lots for dry camping fans to enjoy the islands.

  1. Plan Ahead

    • Some of the dry campsites located in and around the Padre Island National Seashore are miles from any type of water. Bring plenty of water and containers, food, matches and anything else you might need for an extended run of dry camping in the area.

    Beaches

    • There are many miles of primitive undisturbed beaches on Padre Islands that spring breakers never make it to. Look for clearly posted signs as some of the beaches are open to vehicles and dry camping while others are not.

    Park Options

    • Five specific primitive campsites openly invite dry camping on the Padre Islands: Bird Island Basin, Malaquite, North Beach, South Beach and Yarborough Pass.

    Parking Lot Options

    • Many stores allow for overnight dry camping in the parking lots. Several Wal-Mart stores in Brownsville, approximately 20 miles from the Padre Islands, allow overnight RV stays.

    Considerations

    • Clean up the areawhen ready to leave so the next campers can enjoy the same beauty of the Padre Islands that you enjoyed when you first arrived there.
