Walmart is one of the world’s largest retailers, with more than 11,000 stores operating under 71 different banners in 27 countries. More than 2.2 million people work for the company worldwide, with 1.3 million Americans employed by the organization. Many Walmart stores have an in-house pharmacy that's designed to make it quick and easy for customers to fill prescriptions while shopping.
In 2012, the Drug Channels Institute ranked the Walmart pharmacy as the fourth leading U.S. pharmacy by total prescription revenue. The CVS Caremark Corporation took first place, with its retail pharmacy bringing an estimated $43.7 billion and its pharmacy services generating $19.4 billion. The Walgreen company held the No. 2 spot, with $42.8 billion in revenue, followed by Express Scripts, with $32.9 billion in revenue. The Walmart pharmacy realized $17.9 in prescription revenue, slightly ahead of the Rite Aid Corporation, which had $17.7 billion in sales.
Positions and Average Salaries
The Walmart pharmacy employs both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. According to the job site Glassdoor, a Walmart pharmacist earns an average salary of $129,686 per year, with salaries ranging from $105,000 to $160,000. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics cites the average salary for all pharmacists at $116,500 as of May 2013. The site lists the average salary of a Walmart pharmacy technician at $11.17 per hour, ranging from $8 to $17 hourly. The BLS cites the average salary for all pharmacy technicians at $14.83 per hour.
The Walmart pharmacy aims to make prescription drugs affordable to customers by offering them at low rates. A variety of 30-day prescriptions are offered for $4 and 90-day prescriptions for $10, which has saved customers more than $3 billion, according to the company website. All customers are eligible for these rates, as no membership is needed. Customers have access to many types of medication for this low cost, including drugs to treat allergies, colds and flu, arthritis and pain, asthma, cholesterol and diabetes. Antibiotics are also available at this price point.
Customers enjoy a variety of options from the Walmart pharmacy, including home delivery, flu shots and immunizations and a mobile app to manage prescriptions on the go. The pharmacy offers pet medication, and a specialty pharmacy cares for chronic and intricate conditions. Some locations have an in-store clinic where customers can receive select health-care services.
