Facts on Recycling Fireworks

Facts on Recycling Fireworks thumbnail
Gun powder based fireworks can not be recycled.

Recycling fireworks is a tricky proposition, with the possibility of unused explosives causing harm during the recycling process. Chemicals used in the small level explosives routinely sold at fireworks stores must be handled with care when transporting to a recycling center. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Recycling Centers

    • The explosive nature of traditionally made fireworks disallows recycling centers from accepting them.

    Toxic Ingredients

    • Heavy metals and toxic chemicals used in fireworks pose recycling obstacles. Copper, potassium and barium used in many types of fireworks cause air pollution when released.

    Pollution Reduction

    • Spraying water over the area where fireworks are released reduces the damage caused by chemical ash residue.

    Earth Friendly

    • Reduce the impact of non-recyclable products by purchasing fireworks made from less toxic materials. Fireworks created with nitrogen-based materials cause less damage to the environment.

    Modern Technology

    • Fireworks propelled by an air launch, and not gunpowder do not harm the environment. Cardboard remnants from these types of "fireworks" can be recycled at centers which accept cardboard products.
