Gums and teeth

Gingivitis occurs when the gums become infected, swollen and irritated due to plaque build up. Gingivitis can usually be treated by improving oral hygiene. For some children, improving oral hygiene is not enough and a dentist may prescribe the antibiotic, amoxicillin.

  1. Function

    • Amoxicillin treats gingivitis in children by getting rid of the infection in the gums.

    Time frame

    • Children will take amoxicillin for several days, as prescribed by the dentist or doctor. The time it is taken will vary with each child.

    Forms

    • There are three forms of amoxicillin available for children to take. These forms are liquids, chewable tablets and extended-release tablets.

    Side effects

    • Side effects of taking amoxicillin to treat gingivitis in children may include breathing problems, swelling, nausea, diarrhea, seizures, weakness, unusual behavior and changes in the frequency of urination.

    Considerations

    • In order to be effective in treating gingivitis, amoxicillin should be taken the entire time that it is prescribed for--even if the symptoms dissipate. If amoxicillin is discontinued early, gingivitis may still be present and symptoms may reoccur.
