What Classes Do I Need to Major in Accounting?

A career in accounting requires training in math, business and other subjects

Every college and university that offers an accounting major has its own degree requirements, but you can expect to find the same core classes in each program.

Standards

The content of accounting programs is influenced by standards set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, as well as the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the primary accrediting body for business schools.

Aim

The coursework of accounting programs is geared toward preparing students to take professional examinations after graduation. The most common of these is the Uniform CPA Examination, which is required to become a certified public accountant.

Accounting Classes

All students should expect to take classes that cover the basic principles of accounting, auditing, accounting ethics and the tax system. Other courses may depend on your area of interest or specialization, such as forensic accounting and international accounting.

Other Classes

Students majoring in accounting usually must take general business courses, including management, finance, business ethics and marketing. Economics, math and statistics are usually required as well.

Computer Courses

Today's accounting programs normally have a strong computer component, including classes in accounting software and record-keeping systems.
