Definition
-
Triple-wall chimneys make use of the latest technology available in wood heat venting. Several brands are available, but all share the same basic construction: an inner wall (pipe) and an outer wall (pipe) with a third, inner pipe separating the two.
Triple Wall Types
-
Two construction styles are made. One is "air-insulated" and incorporates a blanket of insulation between the inner and outer layers; the second is "air-cooled" and promotes circulation of fire-heated air between pipe layers to allow cooling.
-
Clearance
-
The technology of triple-wall chimneys is such that they can be installed with nearly zero clearance from combustibles, because the outside of the pipe remains relatively cool.
Standards of Safety
-
ANSI/UL103 dictates safety standards for U.S.-manufactured chimney pipes. A chimney must be safety-certified to handle temperatures up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Triple-wall chimney pipes easily exceed that requirement.
Caution
-
While the exterior of triple-wall chimneys remains cooler than other pipes, it will feel hot to the touch.
Warning
-
To ensure safe operation of your triple-wall chimney, follow installation instructions exactly or have it professionally installed.
