Foods Causing Allergies in Dogs

Canine food allergies can cause itchy skin, frequent ear and skin infections, hair loss and gastrointestinal irregularities. Symptoms are non-seasonal and do not respond to steroid treatment.

Protein

According to PetEducation.com, beef, lamb and chicken are the most common protein allergens for dogs.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates in dog foods frequently come from cereals, corn, soybeans, wheat, rice and potato starch Wheat, corn and potato are the most likely to cause canine allergies.

Dairy

Milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream frequently cause canine allergies.

Additives

Chemical additives in commercial dog foods may predispose some dogs to develop allergic food reactions. Antioxidants, histamine, and certain dyes are suspected by Wing-n-Wave Labradors.

Prevention of Food Allergies

Diane Morgan, author of "The Basset Hound Owner's Survival Guide," recommends a varied diet from puppyhood. This will strengthen your dog's immune system and lessen the chance of food allergies.
