Cat Constipation & Mineral Oil

Constipation is an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous condition for your cat. Many treatment options are available to relieve the condition and its symptoms, including laxatives such as mineral oil.

Function

Mineral oil lubricates hardened fecal matter in the cat's colon, making it easier to pass. It also acts as a stimulant to produce a bowel movement.

Uses

Mineral oil can be given orally as a laxative or can be used as a lubricant in an enema.

Considerations

Cats occasionally refuse to take the mineral oil, as it has no taste and they simply don't like it.

Warning

Oral administration of mineral oil is a controversial remedy for feline constipation. The liquid is easily inhaled into the cat's lungs. The body cannot remove it completely, and your cat's immune system will continue to attack the oil in this situation.

Alternatives

Mineral oil is only one option for feline constipation. Others include oral administration of petroleum jelly, feline laxatives such as laxatone, canned pumpkin, Metamucil and even cow's milk.
