Facts on the Touchscreen

A touchscreen panel is a display screen that acts like an input device when you press 'buttons' on the screen to instruct the device, and like an output device when it gives you feedback by displaying an image.

  1. Interaction

    • To interact with a device with a touchscreen panel, you apply pressure on specific locations on the screen. The pressure-sensitive technology recognizes a tap on the screen, and translates it into a command for the device to perform a function.

    Applications

    • Nowadays, touchscreen monitors are used extensively in a broad range of devices, across diverse settings. The technology is found in ATMs, POS (point of sales) machines, high-end cellular phones and PDAs, tablet PCs and gaming consoles.

    Technology

    • Touchscreen monitors are based on three different technologies: resistive, capacitive and surface wave.

    Attributes

    • Resistive touchscreens are extremely durable and can be used either with fingers or a stylus, but they lack brightness and clarity. Surface wave technology is the most advanced and displays brighter images, but it also requires more maintenance and care. Capacitive touchscreens have high-quality displays, but they must be tapped with fingers and do not respond to a stylus or pen.

    Choice

    • Due to their properties, different touchscreen technologies are better suited for different applications. Factors that determine which touchscreen technology is the best choice include device type, setting, mobility of device, and desired clarity and brightness.
