Most famous baseball players have their likeness forever emblazoned on trading cards. The same set of standards used for determining the value of other stars' trading cards apply to Nolan Ryan cards.
According to Josh Pankow of Atlanta Sports Cards, a card's scarcity determines its value. “Typically, if they are hard to find, they are going to have more value,” explains Pankow.
Trading cards also become more valuable if they have an autograph or a piece of the player's jersey or other equipment.
Nolan Ryan cards can range anywhere from 50 cents to thousands of dollars. Pankow estimates a typical Ryan card's worth at anywhere from $2 to $3.
Pankow says the fact that Nolan Ryan was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame has no real impact on the price of his cards, because he was expected to be a Hall of Famer; unexpected accolades can spike a trading card's value.
For the most part, popular cards maintain their value, even in a recession, though the sports card industry itself has taken a huge hit in the last year, Pankow says. “This is typically an industry people spend their extra money on,” he says. “When they run out of this extra money, they tend to stop buying little things like trading cards.”
