Alberta Boating Regulations
A boat owner should always know the regulations for the state or country in which he or she operates a boat. Alberta, Canada, has specific regulations concerning equipment, safety, speed and alcohol consumption while boating.
-
Engine
-
A boat engine and fuel tank must have a blower and ventilation system that meets the construction standards for small vessels. The blower must be turned on at least four minutes before the boat is started.
Equipment
-
The basic equipment that is required to be on a boat is a life jacket for each person riding on the boat, flares, a fire extinguisher, flashlights, lifebuoys, a manual propelling device and manual water pumps.
-
Speed
-
The speed limit when one is boating within 30 meters of shore is 10 kilometer per hour. All other speed limits must be followed as posted. The standard speed limits on waterways are 5, 10, 25, 40 and 55 kilometers per hour.
Alcohol
-
It is illegal to drink alcohol and operate a boat in Alberta.
Operator Competency
-
All operators of boats must carry a Operator Competency card. This card is obtained by having a pleasure craft operating card, a completed rental boat safety checklist or a certificate showing the completion of a boating safety course.
Tips
-
One should inspect a boat and equipment before going out on the water. In addition, taking an accredited Canadian boating course gives an individual the opportunity to learn all of Alberta's boating regulations.
