AMD Dual Core Vs. Quad Core

AMD's dual and quad cores are very competitive

AMD was the first to announce the development of a dual core processor and also first to bring a quad core processor to market. Today, AMD's dual and quad cores have numerous similarities.

  1. History

    • The first AMD dual core was released in 2006, trailing Intel by only a few months. AMD was eager to pass Intel and released the first quad core processor in 2007.

Architecture - Athlon & Athlon II

    • AMD's Athlon processors continue to share roots with the K7 series of processor architectures, which has been around since 1999. However, the Athlon II processors are actually based off the Phenom II architecture.

Architecture - Phenom & Phenom II

    • The Phenom architecture was introduced in 2007 and was the world's first quad core processor. The Phenom II is an update of the architecture aimed at enhancing performance and providing DDR3 memory support.

    Performance

    • The performance of an AMD dual core processor relative to a quad core depends on if the processor is an Athlon or an Athlon II. Athlon processors are not at all able to keep up with AMD's Athlon II or Phenom II quad core processors, but the Athlon II based dual core processors remain competitive.

    Power Consumption

    • Because of the higher number of cores, AMD's quad core processors consume more power than the dual core processors.
