Eye Swelling From Mold

Mold allergies can cause swollen eyes.

Molds are plantlike organisms that are forms of fungi. These fungi are found both indoors and outdoors, specifically in areas of high humidity. Mold can cause the development of, or increase, health problems, especially for people who have allergies. Symptoms may include swollen eyes.

Where Mold Grows

Mold flourishes in places that maintain damp moisture in the air--areas that are warm, poorly ventilated and dark.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website, people with mold allergies can experience "symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation."

Eye Reactions to Allergies

According to the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center's website, "allergies of the eye, like all allergies, are overreactions of the immune system to foreign substances, which might otherwise be harmless." Common symptoms include eye swelling, redness, itching and irritation.

Swollen Eyes

Swelling of the eye is a direct symptom of an irritant in the eye. Mold and the spores that arise from mold can significantly irritate and affect the health of the eye.

Treatment

Medications such as decongestants and antihistamines are commonly prescribed to reduce general symptoms of allergic reactions to mold. For swollen eyes and irritation, cool compresses and artificial tears are helpful pain relievers.
